If you search for Philadelphia’s best bakery through any one of a half-dozen high-profile regional media outlets, one name repeatedly comes up: Artisan Boulanger Pâtissier, a French bakery in the East Passyunk neighborhood of South Philadelphia. Founded in 2002 by Cambodian immigrants and husband-and-wife team Andre Chin and Amanda Eap, the beloved bakery draws loyal fans from around the block and across the city, as well as countless accolades—including several James Beard semifinalist nods for Outstanding Baker.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, after fleeing the war in Cambodia at 15, Chin “landed in France [and] studied cooking and baking in Paris,” wrote Michael Klein, the Inquirer’s longstanding food journalist. “He was working at a Paris hotel in the 1980s when, during a visit to Philadelphia, he walked into the West Philadelphia doughnut shop owned by Eap’s father.” Eap said in the article it was love at first sight, and that after that they were never apart. //
