The Delaware Contemporary used a simple geometric principle in laying the foundation for its summer show: the radius. Using its Wilmington museum as the center, it set five teams of curators the task of filling six group exhibits from artists who fell within 250 miles of the museum. If you’re looking for one show to visit this summer that will immerse you in the thoughtful talent that resides in the Mid-Atlantic region, “Radius” is it. Featuring scores of artists working in sculpture, painting, video installation, natural materials, and mixed-media traditions, it’s a chance for viewers to meditate on place, identity, and the cycles of life.

Included in the show is the architecturally inspired painting Monument by Rosalyn Richards, which is itself an exploration of geometric form and its power to create mystery and metaphor that doesn’t respect hard boundaries. A large triangle serves as the form of a temple, encoded on its surface with small white circles, which are echoed in the simple stars and planets that careen outside the building’s walls in a mix of order and chaos. In her artist statement, Richards says she seeks to explore “liminal space, places of entering or beginning, contrasting realms, spaces or transitions, including: earth and cosmos, inside and outside, twilight and dawn, past and future, waking and dreaming, knowing and not knowing.” Richards’ work is featured in the “In Communion” group show that also features Su Knoll Horty, Rebecca Howell, Gard Jones, and Becca Lowry. //
