But then, it wasn’t just the church or the art world. Whatever “it” was, I began to see that it was everywhere. Politics, journalism, medicine, gay rights organizations, women’s rights organizations. Everywhere I looked, I felt like I was seeing an institution that had given up on itself. Historians and classicists were beginning to reject the idea of civilization and classics, speech was now harm, every question worth asking already had pre-approved answers, and even the hard sciences were playing along when they weren’t weaponizing or monetizing their research.
