Artist Corinne Dieterle, 69, rows often in a single scull on Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River, along its famous Boathouse Row. For about six years, Dieterle had been aware of a man living along the river, and after seeing that the Philadelphia Police had razed his encampment one afternoon in 2018, she decided to make contact.

In their first conversation, the pair connected. In a blog post, Dieterle writes, “I referenced his having had a visit from the Philadelphia Police the previous week and he nodded and said, ‘Yes, and I need a lawyer,’ which was why he was too busy to talk with me at this time at any length.
